Instead of translating the complete PMBOK® Guide, like we did earlier with the 3rd and 4th edition of the PMBOK Guide, PMI Netherlands Chapter decided to translate the pocket companion instead, also based on the success of our pocket companion to PMI’s PMBOK Guide 5th edition.

PMI’s PMBOK® Guide in een notendop. De nederlandse vertaling van ‘A pocket companion to PMI's PMBOK® Guide 5th edition’

Given the fact that PMI’s PMBOK® Guide next to most PMI publications are in English, PMI Netherlands Chapter recognized the need of having a translation in Dutch. Instead of translating the complete PMBOK® Guide, like we did earlier with the 3rd and 4th edition of the PMBOK Guide, we decide to translate this handy pocket companion. This pocket guide  is fully aligned with the PMBOK® Guide 5th edition. Making it easier for people to get better acquainted to PMI and its foundational standards has always been high on the agenda of the PMI Netherlands Chapter. Therefore, we needed a pragmatic response to the so called ‘localization issue’, as we recognized and wanted to address the needs of PM practitioners: not only PMI members, but even more importantly, people who hadn’t come across PMI yet. We wanted to break down existing language barriers which led to the initial idea, in 2009, of creating a pocket companion to PMI’s PMBOK® Guide (4th Edition). It developed into a valuable asset for our Chapter and our members as well as for people showing an interest in the PMBOK® Guide and PMI, and we still see a growing number of users:

  • Project, program and portfolio managers, who need a quick reference and an easier introduction to PMI’s key standard, the PMBOK® Guide, and for whom English is not their native language;
  • But also the more senior management levels, who recognize the need to have a slightly better understanding about e.g. their project sponsor role in the context of PM processes for realizing projects more successfully. However, it’s unlikely that they will read the PMBOK® Guide, as that is simply too voluminous and typically written for the so called ‘die-hard project managers’, next to the fact that it’s not available in Dutch. At the same time, as their PMs are frequently referring to PMI’s best practices and the value of its foundational standards, they feel the urge to find out what these standards are all about….

The original English pocket companion already proved to partly fulfil the needs described above. Nevertheless, a Dutch translation was necessary to lower possible language barriers. This pocket companion provides not only a quick introduction of the PMBOK® Guide content, but also, and just as importantly, of PMI as an organization and its value for the PM profession and realization of business success. It will definitely support project management professionals in the field and prove its value for business leadership being responsible for Change and Strategy realization of their organizations.

This publication has been made possible by the cooperation of a translation team, consisting of one of the authors, Anton Zandhuis, Rommert Stellingwerf and André Legerman, supported by the publishing and editing team of Van Haren Publishing.
