An excellent article by Phil Bristol, CMC, PMP, Projectivity Solutions and Gary Yeatts, MSW, Clarity Technologies to promote the leadership aspects of project management and the enhancement of the project management community. It was originally published as a part of the 2010 PMI Global Congress Proceedings – Washington DC, USA.

 

Abstract

Success as a project management professional requires a balance of subject matter competence, interpersonal skills, and conceptual abilities that produce an expected result. Business executive’s expectations regarding a project management professional’s competencies have evolved with increasing emphasis on leadership. Understanding the role of a leader and the importance of leadership communication skills are the prime factors for achieving the right organizational results. Unfortunately, most project management oriented publications do not explain interpersonal skill development with the same clarity used to describe project management processes. A leaders ability to influence, inspire, and motive directly correlates to interpersonal skill proficiency. The first section of this paper presents the importance of leadership on achieving results and the difference between managers and leaders. The second section reviews situational leadership and emotional intelligence as frameworks for the language of leadership. The third section explores how leaders can develop influence skills using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Dominance, Influencing, Steadiness, Compliance (DISC) communication assessment, and their “Way of Being.”

António Amaral is a doctoral student at Minho University(Portugal), Department of Production and Systems, in the area of Project Management and he recently developed a questionnaire on Learning and Knowledge Management in Organizations.

The target group for this questionnaire are people who have obtained the PMP credential and is divided in four different parts:

- Data of the interview;

- Technology in the organizational environment;

- Organizational learning environment;

- Leadership.

It takes about 15-20 minutes to answer the questions in this questionnaire.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to measure the importance of learning and knowledge management topics to organizations. Can they constitute the new pillars for performance enhancement and for obtaining market differentiation? We intend to evaluate this phenomenon. The work environment, the relationship between employees, the kind of leadership, the technology available, the organizational culture, among other factors, are examined in the questionnaire.

Ravi Srinivasan is a PhD student in The Eli Broad School of Business at Michigan State University in USA. He is currently working on a dissertation which examines effective methods of managing outsourcing engagements. As part of the dissertation process, he is collecting responses from project managers who are currently involved (or were recently involved) in an outsourcing engagement.

This research examines an important area to our membership and each respondent will be entered into a raffle to win one of three iPads and will be provided a detailed executive brief of the findings, if the respondent indicates that he/she would like to receive the report.

Governing outsourcing engagements in the presence of uncertainty and supplier opportunism

Brief Description:

Successfully managing an outsourcing engagement is a difficult endeavor. It becomes even more difficult when the supplier acts opportunistically and the project team encounters uncertainty in requirements, resources and technology. The goal of this study is to examine governance mechanisms used by buying firms/ units and recommend appropriate methods to manage an outsourcing engagement under conditions of opportunism and uncertainty. Your participation in this study will enable us to examine effective methods of managing outsourcing projects.

Exposure Draft Period Approaches for The Practice Standard for Estimating

The exposure draft for this standard will be made available for comments on PMI’s website at PMI.org on 29 March 2010.  The comment period will remain open until 5:00 p.m. EST on 13 May 2010. 

This is the time to voice any concerns, share perspective or lend professional insight. We encourage all members, volunteers and the greater project management community to take this opportunity to get involved.
