Being in Control!

One of the biggest challenges for a project manager is to maintain control of the project. Scope creep, overspending, lack of communications are all common pitfalls to project completion. Being able to reliably anticipate project performance to overcome these challenges is an invaluable asset for project managers.

Earned Value Management (EVM) and Project Risk Management (PRM) are both control mechanisms that provide project managers the opportunity to gather data that will allow them to secure project control and make proactive decisions.

EVM is a known technique within project controls that analyze the progress of the project. In this presentation, a few attention points are spoken for the implementation of a EVM system based on some experiences from international projects.

In the second presentation, it is all about Risks. A schedule risk analysis is a powerful tool to gain insight into the influence of risks and uncertainties on the cost and duration of a project. Rijkswaterstaat has included the probabilistic planning in its PPI (Project Planning Infrastructure) method, a method that is increasingly being adopted by other clients and contractors. A short introduction is given in the Monte Carlo technique and the benefits of a schedule risk analysis for e.g. scheduling and risk control. Furthermore, Maarten Lolcama, from Antea group, will speak about how this technique is used in practice within the PPI method of Rijkswaterstaat.

We welcome you to learn, listen and debate on the 19th April in Capelle aan den IJssel!

Mr. Stijn van de Vonder (Primaned) is Director Primaned Belgium. He is a life-long student in project management who is on a personal mission to improve the industry practices in the area of project controls. Stijn will present us with some ways of implementation of EVM into projects.

Mr. Jelmer Wagenaar (Primaned) is Manager Academy. He is responsible for Primaned’s training courses. Jelmer will teach us something about Risk Management and especially with the technique of Monte Carlo.

Mr. Maarten Lolcama (Antea Group Nederland) is Manager Project Controls, Risk Manager, and (PPI) Planner. He is responsible for project controlling in the field of flood risk management. Maarten has 14 years of experience with (integral) projects involving multiple actors. He will show us how Rijkswaterstaat profits by using Risk Management techniques.
